Challenges

Coinciding with the release of the Modern client for Windows 8, we took the opportunity to update the classic desktop client and give it a lighter, more coherent feel by creating one place for all core navigation as well as other enhancements such as integrating the search / add people flow and creating a scaleable IM transport switcher.

Previously the core navigation elements had been scattered around the entire left side of the client.

Taking cues from the Metro design language, we consolidated all the core navigation into a single toolbar/search component, which helped users both generally get around the client as well as discovering functionality (not to mention giving more vertical space for seeing contacts & recent conversations).
